In preparation for the ODI World Cup in 2023, New Zealand has improved its support personnel. Stephen Fleming and James Foster are expected to join the team. Over the next four months away from home, New Zealand’s coaching staff will also include a revolving cast of individuals, including Ian Bell and Saqlain Mushtaq.
Fleming brings a strong IPL track record to the team.
Given that both Fleming and Foster have IPL experience, their selections are very significant. Fleming joins the team with an impressive IPL resume; he has led the Chennai Super Kings to five league championships. Before the UAE hosted the 2021 T20 World Cup, Fleming had previously worked with New Zealand. He will join the New Zealand team for the ODI series against England, which starts on September 8, three days after the conclusion of the T20I series, after which he will continue to coach the Southern Brave in the men’s hundred.
Gary Stead, the head coach of New Zealand, said, “I think Flem will be great for players on that side of it and also good for the staff.” He has an extensive understanding of that region of the world (India) and has been a coach in the IPL since the beginning of the league (in 2009), so he has experience in all the locations where we will play. He will attend the World Cup; he has extensive IPL coaching experience with the KKR team and has worked with video analysts in that capacity. For Luke Ronchi, Ian Bell will step in.
For the upcoming T20I series against England, Bell, a former England batter, has been named as New Zealand’s assistant coach. He will subsequently take over as the batting coach for the ensuing ODI series against England in place of Luke Ronchi. Stead will then have a brief rest before Ronchi takes over for the three-match ODI series in Bangladesh in September, which is New Zealand’s final ODI assignment before the World Cup. During the ODIs in Bangladesh, Bell will support Ronchi and bowling coach Shane Jurgensen. At the moment, Bell is a men’s basketball assistant coach with the Birmingham Phoenix.
The manager of New Zealand, Simon Insley, stated that “the health of our players and staff is of vital importance given the sheer volume of cricket being played these days.”
“After the T20 team departs for the UAE on August 12, the team will remain on the road until the Test team returns on December 16, ahead of a busy domestic summer,” the statement continued.
Saqlain will return to the New Zealand support crew.
In addition, Stead will take a break for the Bangladesh tour’s Test leg, which begins on November 23 with a two-day practice match, just four days after the World Cup final on November 19. After previously working with the white-ball teams during the Pakistan tour in April, former Pakistan spinner Saqlain will re-join the team for that Test tour. He was hired as a spin coach. With Jurgensen taking over as Wellington’s head coach after the World Cup, the new bowling coach’s first assignment is expected to be the team’s Test trip to Bangladesh. Saqi is a wonderful person, Stead declared. He has experience working with our team members in Pakistan, is knowledgeable about spin-bowling stocks, and has undoubtedly improved that aspect of the game. Simply put, he is quite knowledgeable.
