Tammy Beaumont her Resilience Shines Through as England Fights for Ashes Test Redemption
The English opener finished the second day undefeated on 100 after surviving a non-review at 61.
Just quickly pump your legs, then dive if necessary. That was the only thing Tammy Beaumont told herself as she dashed for a second run that would propel her to a first-ever Test century in the day’s penultimate over.
She had spent the previous day and a half fielding, primarily in close range, as Australia established a sizable first-innings 473 before becoming only the second woman, following Heather Knight, who served as her captain and batting partner for the majority of her innings, to hit a hundred in each of the three international forms.
Tammy Beaumont, who was unbeaten at the end of the game and had reached 100, also had the joy of keeping her team in the Ashes Test, which earlier on the second day appeared to be going firmly in Australia’s favour. She added that she was used to having close interactions when significant milestones were reached.

After scoring 201 not out in the warm-up game last week, Beaumont’s innings, which included a century stand with Knight, and an unbroken 67-run partnership for the third wicket with Nat Sciver-Brunt, helped England to 218 for 2 on a batting-friendly surface at Trent Bridge.
The final score will eventually determine where this inning ranks in Beaumont’s international career, which started in 2009 and currently encompasses 210 matches across formats. England is still down by 255 runs.
Tammy Beaumont, who lost her spot in England’s T20 team for the Commonwealth Games and T20 World Cup last year, said, “It feels pretty good.” The team is in a fantastic position so that we can bat long tomorrow. The ball hopped to Phoebe Litchfield at short leg when she smacked legspinner Alana King into her boot on the run 61, but the catch wasn’t given, and Australia didn’t review.
“I knew I hit it, I knew it hit my foot, but I didn’t know if it hit the floor as well,” Tammy Beaumont said. “But not mine to make, not mine to change, not mine to do anything like that. It’s hard to determine whether anything has touched the ground when it strikes your foot. I hit it fortunate with one. However, I’ve made a few bad judgements in regional cricket over the past month or two, so the luck came just in time.
‘Oh, that’s close,’ I thought. When I talked with Alana, Tammy said, “Yeah, I was out,” Knight told Sky Sports. She has tiny feet, so I’m unsure how she hit that up. However, it’s clear that they didn’t review it, and Tammy got away with it. She must have been driven to get it [her hundred] before the game ended; I’m very proud of her. Being in the field for such a long time is difficult, but I was impressed with her level of focus and competence.
Annabel Sutherland made a case for promotion from No. 8. Still, she was prepared to fill in wherever necessary as part of “a pretty solid lineup” after scoring an unbroken 137 for Australia off the back of another century in a warm-up match against England A.
It’s unique, Sutherland said. It hasn’t been fully registered yet. You always wanted to put on the Baggy Green as a kid, but doing that job for the team yesterday and today was excellent, and I got fantastic support on the other end. The most important thing was being out there and spending time with the squad; I was pleased to contribute however I could.
“Tammy and Nat, in particular, batted well, but in saying that, despite that, we generated seven or eight opportunities, so considering that we are 260 runs ahead, we are still clearly in the lead. Tomorrow morning’s start will put us in an excellent position, and we can improve a little in the field to seize those chances. There are still three days and plenty of opportunities left in the game, so you never know.
